Staghorn Fern – Sculptural Indoor Foliage
The Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum) is a unique tropical fern that brings a touch of the rainforest into any home. Its striking antler-shaped fronds grow from brown, protective basal fronds that cradle the roots, creating a dramatic, sculptural display. Indoors, the fronds can reach 1–2 feet, forming cascading or upright shapes depending on mounting or placement. Slow-growing yet long-lived, this fern can thrive for decades with proper care.

Plant Features
This epiphytic fern naturally grows on trees in Oceania and Asia, making it ideal for mounting on wooden boards or placing in hanging baskets. The velvety green antler-like fronds contrast beautifully with the rounded, brown basal fronds, adding texture and dimension. The plant flourishes in bright, indirect light—east or north-facing windows are ideal—and avoids direct sun to prevent leaf burn.

Care and Maintenance
Keep the soil or moss around the roots consistently moist, allowing the plant to dry slightly between deep waterings. Submerge the root ball occasionally for thorough hydration, and mist regularly to boost humidity. Temperatures between 50–100°F (10–38°C) suit the Staghorn Fern, and it thrives in naturally humid spaces like bathrooms or kitchens. Fertilize monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Prune damaged fronds as needed and rotate the plant for even growth. Propagation is possible by dividing mature fronds with attached basal shields and roots, keeping sections moist until established.

Display and Landscaping Ideas
Staghorn Ferns make stunning focal points on walls, in hanging baskets, or as part of a tropical indoor plant collection. Pair with trailing vines or other ferns to create a layered, lush display that evokes a miniature indoor jungle.
