Philodendron Summer Glory – A Sunset in Your Living Room
Philodendron Summer Glory is a tropical gem that transforms any indoor space with its breathtaking foliage. This hybrid, a cross between Philodendron gloriosum and McColley Red, captivates with heart-shaped leaves that begin in vibrant coppery-pink with dramatic purplish veins and gradually deepen to lush green, highlighted with soft yellow streaks and red edges. Each emerging leaf is wrapped in a red sheath, making every growth stage a colorful surprise. Compact yet elegant, Philodendron Summer Glory brings the feeling of a tropical rainforest right into your home.
Plant Characteristics:
-
Botanical Name: Philodendron gloriosum x McColley Red
-
Leaf Shape & Color: Heart-shaped, semi-glossy; coppery-pink, green, cream, and red tones
-
Mature Size: 2–3 feet tall indoors, leaves up to 12–18 inches
-
Growth Habit: Upright and slightly arching, maintains a compact, sculptural form
-
Origin: Central and South America
Care Tips:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the leaves vivid. Tolerates medium light but avoid direct sun to prevent burns.
-
Watering: Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry between waterings. Overwatering can harm roots, while occasional underwatering is safe.
-
Soil: A well-draining mix of peat, loam, orchid bark, and perlite is ideal for healthy roots.
-
Humidity & Temperature: Prefers 65–80°F (18–27°C) and moderate to high humidity. Use misting, a pebble tray, or a humidifier in dry homes.
-
Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing in winter.
-
Pruning & Propagation: Remove yellow or damaged leaves to maintain compact growth. Stem cuttings root easily in soil or water.
Practical Uses:
Philodendron Summer Glory works beautifully alongside other tropical plants like Calathea, Monstera, or smaller Philodendrons. Its dramatic, multi-colored leaves make it a natural centerpiece for living rooms, offices, or indoor plant corners. Its compact size, reliable growth, and ever-changing colors make it ideal for both new plant parents and experienced collectors.
