Philodendron Lickety Split – Bold, Tropical Elegance Indoors
The Philodendron ‘Lickety Split’ is a tropical statement plant that transforms any room into a lush, green retreat. Known for its deeply split, ruffled leaves and sculptural form, this vibrant hybrid of Philodendron bipinnatifidum brings the feeling of a rainforest right into your living space. With each leaf shaped uniquely, it creates a dynamic, natural look that’s both bold and soothing.
Botanical details:
Botanical name – Philodendron bipinnatifidum (syn. Philodendron selloum)
Common names – Lickety Split, Lacy Tree Philodendron, Horsehead Philodendron
Native to Brazil and the tropical regions of South America, this self-heading philodendron grows outward rather than climbing. Indoors, it typically reaches 2–3 feet tall and wide, but in ideal conditions, its lush lobed leaves can stretch up to 5 feet long. The leaves have deep, jagged edges and glossy green surfaces, with new growth appearing a soft, lime green before maturing to a rich emerald shade.
Growth and environment:
The Philodendron ‘Lickety Split’ thrives in bright to moderate indirect light. Too much direct sunlight may scorch its leaves, while low light will slow growth. Ideal indoor temperatures range from 65°F to 75°F (15–24°C). Though humidity isn’t essential, occasional misting helps maintain healthy, glossy foliage.
Care tips:
Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry — this prevents root rot and supports steady growth. Use a well-draining, organic-rich soil mix. Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10). Wipe the leaves regularly to remove dust and support photosynthesis. Repot every 12–18 months into a container one size larger to allow roots to expand.
If you notice yellowing leaves, reduce watering frequency. Curling or drooping leaves often indicate inconsistent moisture. Keep the plant away from cold drafts and heating vents.
Styling and landscape use:
Perfect for living rooms, offices, or large indoor corners, this philodendron’s bold leaf shape makes it a natural centerpiece. Pair it with other tropical plants such as Monstera or Bird of Paradise for a layered, jungle-like arrangement. The Philodendron ‘Lickety Split’ also purifies indoor air, filtering toxins like benzene and trichloroethylene, creating a fresher home environment.
Note: This plant is toxic if ingested and should be kept out of reach of pets and children.
