Monstera adansonii ‘Wide Form’ (Swiss Cheese Vine)
Elegant and full of character, Monstera adansonii ‘Wide Form’, often called the Swiss Cheese Vine, brings a touch of the tropics to any indoor setting. Its distinctive leaves, marked by large, natural perforations, resemble slices of Swiss cheese — each one unique and sculptural. This variety, known for its broader, richly textured foliage, offers a more dramatic look compared to the standard form of Monstera adansonii.
Botanical profile
A native of the rainforests of Central and South America, Monstera adansonii ‘Wide Form’ is a climbing aroid that naturally trails or climbs using aerial roots. Its heart-shaped leaves feature irregular holes that get larger toward the base, creating an airy, lace-like appearance. Mature plants reach about 2–3 feet in height indoors, though they can extend much further when supported by a moss pole or allowed to cascade from a hanging basket.
Growing conditions and care
This Monstera thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers temperatures between 65°F and 75°F. It tolerates moderate humidity but appreciates a boost to around 65–75%, especially in drier homes. Water every 7–10 days, letting the top 2–3 inches of soil dry before watering again. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot, as this species prefers lightly moist but never soggy soil.
For soil, use a well-draining mix rich in organic matter — a blend of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark works perfectly. Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer using a diluted liquid fertilizer; reduce feeding in winter when growth slows.
Maintenance tips
Regular pruning helps shape the vine and encourage fuller growth. Provide a support pole or trellis to help it climb naturally — or let it trail elegantly from a shelf or hanging planter. Clean leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance their vibrant green tone. This variety is generally resistant to pests, though thrips may appear occasionally; maintaining proper airflow and moisture helps prevent issues.
Design and pairing
Monstera adansonii ‘Wide Form’ pairs beautifully with other tropical plants like philodendrons, pothos, or calatheas, creating lush green groupings with contrasting leaf textures. Its adaptable nature makes it a favorite accent for modern interiors, offices, and shaded patios. Whether climbing or cascading, it adds structure and natural elegance to any space.
