Hoya latifolia ‘Pot of Gold’ — a tropical cascade of golden foliage
Hoya latifolia ‘Pot of Gold’, also known as Hoya macrophylla ‘Pot of Gold’, is a rare and stunning tropical vine prized for its broad, waxy leaves adorned with creamy-golden streaks along the central vein. Each leaf is a unique work of art, giving this plant its name and making it a treasured addition to any indoor collection. Native to the lowland forests of Myanmar and Western Malaysia, this epiphytic beauty thrives when given the right balance of light, humidity, and support.
Botanical Features
Belonging to the Hoya genus, Hoya latifolia ‘Pot of Gold’ forms a moderately slow-growing vine that can climb trellises or elegantly drape from hanging baskets. Mature leaves reach 4–6 inches in length, thick and glossy with subtle undulations that catch the light. In optimal indoor conditions, the plant produces clusters of pale cream-colored, star-shaped flowers with a delicate sweet fragrance. Its epiphytic nature allows it to adapt well to elevated pots or moss-lined supports, mimicking its natural habitat.
Care and Growing Tips
Hoya latifolia ‘Pot of Gold’ flourishes in bright, indirect light; very bright, diffused light enhances leaf variegation, sometimes inducing subtle red edges on the leaves. Avoid direct sun to prevent burning. Use a well-draining mix combining orchid bark, perlite, and coconut fiber to ensure roots stay healthy. Water thoroughly but allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before the next watering, reducing frequency in winter. Maintain moderate to high humidity—60–70% is ideal—or group with other plants or use a humidifier. Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Trim vines to encourage fuller growth, and repot every 2–3 years or when roots fill the container.
Decorative Use and Companions
This hoya’s unique foliage pairs beautifully with trailing or tropical plants such as Philodendron, Monstera, or Pothos. Display on trellises, hanging planters, or shelves to highlight the striking gold variegation. Its slow, controlled growth and elegant cascading habit make it ideal for both compact interiors and larger plant arrangements.
