Hoya carnosa (Wax Plant)
Graceful and timeless, Hoya carnosa, also known as the Wax Plant or Porcelain Flower, is a semi-succulent vine celebrated for its thick, glossy leaves and clusters of star-shaped blooms that look as if they were sculpted from porcelain. Native to East Asia and Australia, this resilient climber adds a touch of elegance and calm to any interior, thriving for decades with minimal care.
The Hoya carnosa grows long, trailing vines lined with dark green, almond-shaped leaves that store moisture, giving the plant its signature waxy texture. Mature plants can reach up to 12–20 feet in length, developing unique flowering spurs—small woody stems that should never be pruned, as they rebloom year after year. When in bloom, it produces creamy-white flowers with deep pink centers, forming spherical clusters that release a sweet, subtle fragrance, especially in the evening.
For best growth, place your Hoya in bright, indirect light—it loves gentle morning sun but should be shielded from harsh afternoon rays. Ideal temperatures range from 65–75°F (18–24°C), though it can tolerate slightly warmer or cooler conditions. It prefers well-draining soil, such as a mix of peat, perlite, and orchid bark, and a container with drainage holes to prevent root rot. Water only when the top 2 inches of soil are dry; overwatering is one of the few things this plant dislikes. Moderate humidity (around 40–60%) encourages lush foliage and more frequent flowering.
Feed Hoya carnosa every four weeks during spring and summer using a diluted balanced fertilizer to support new growth and bud formation. Avoid moving the plant once buds appear, as even small changes in lighting can cause them to drop. Its adaptability makes it ideal for hanging baskets, trellises, or as a trailing accent on shelves. In landscape design, it pairs beautifully with other tropicals such as Philodendron, Pothos, and Ferns.
With its evergreen foliage, long life, and nostalgic fragrance, Hoya carnosa is a perfect choice for both new and experienced plant lovers seeking a low-maintenance yet visually stunning houseplant.
