Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ — Elegant Variegated Rubber Plant
Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ is a striking variegated variety of the classic rubber plant, loved for its broad, glossy leaves painted in soft shades of green, cream, and sometimes blushed with pink or red tones. Originating from tropical regions of Southeast Asia, this plant adds a touch of lush elegance to any home while remaining remarkably easy to care for.
As it matures, Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ can reach up to 6 feet indoors, developing sturdy stems topped with oval leaves that shine like polished wax. The creamy marbled edges and subtle pink veins create a lively contrast that brightens both modern and traditional interiors. Its slow, upright growth makes it an excellent statement plant for living rooms, offices, or sunrooms.
This Ficus thrives in bright, indirect light, similar to the dappled sunlight of its native forests. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the foliage, while low light may fade the variegation. Place it near an east-facing window or filtered southern light for best color. The plant prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil, such as a mix for houseplants or cacti, and should be watered once the top layer of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering — allowing excess moisture to drain freely prevents root rot.
Maintain average room temperatures between 60–75°F (15–24°C) and avoid cold drafts or sudden temperature drops. Though tolerant of average humidity, occasional misting or wiping the leaves with a damp cloth helps maintain their glossy finish and supports healthy growth. During spring and summer, feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every few weeks; stop feeding in the dormant winter months.
In home décor, Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ pairs beautifully with green-leaved plants like Monstera or Philodendron, accentuating its creamy tones. Its sculptural form complements minimalist and tropical-inspired designs alike, making it a favorite among plant enthusiasts.
