Calathea rufibarba (Velvet Calathea)

Native to Brazil’s rainforests, this indoor favorite is admired for its long, soft, velvety leaves — deep green on top and rich burgundy underneath — that subtly move with changing light, giving a sense of life and calm to any room.

Description and Growth
Botanically called Calathea rufibarba, this compact tropical plant reaches about 2–2.5 feet tall. Its slender, feather-like leaves grow from short, fuzzy stems that feel soft to the touch. Unlike many bright-leaved Calatheas, the rufibarba stands out with its elegant matte finish and luxurious texture, making it a refined accent for modern interiors.

Light and Temperature
It thrives in bright, indirect light or medium shade. Avoid direct sunlight — it can fade or scorch the leaves. Ideal indoor temperatures range between 65°F and 78°F. Keep it away from cold drafts, air conditioners, or heaters, as temperatures below 60°F may cause leaf curling or browning.

Water and Humidity
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Let the top inch dry slightly before watering again. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater, as Calatheas are sensitive to tap-water minerals. High humidity (50–60% or more) is essential — place a humidifier nearby, group plants together, or set the pot on a pebble tray with water to recreate its tropical environment.

Soil and Feeding
Use a light, well-draining mix with peat or coco coir and perlite. Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted houseplant fertilizer at one-quarter strength. Repot annually in spring if roots begin to show through drainage holes.

Maintenance and Styling
Remove yellow or damaged leaves at the base to keep it neat. Brown edges usually mean low humidity or hard water. In décor, Calathea rufibarba pairs beautifully with ferns, alocasias, or marantas, adding soft contrast to bright foliage and clean, minimalist spaces.
