Calathea ‘Royal Standard’

Elegant and full of tropical grace, Calathea ‘Royal Standard’ brings a touch of refined greenery into any home. This hybrid variety, native to the lush rainforests of Central and South America, is admired for its shimmering leaves — long, oval, and satin-smooth — displaying a silver-green center surrounded by a deep emerald border. The undersides of the leaves reveal hues of rich purple, adding a striking contrast when the plant’s leaves naturally rise and fold with the rhythm of day and night, a motion characteristic of the “prayer plant” family (Marantaceae).

As it matures, Calathea ‘Royal Standard’ reaches about 3 feet in height and width, forming a lush, rounded shape. In optimal indoor conditions, this variety may even surprise you with soft pink or white blooms. It thrives in bright, indirect light or partial shade — much like in its native forest floor environment, where light filters gently through higher canopies. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves and fade their intricate coloring.

This tropical perennial enjoys consistently moist soil that drains well. Overwatering, however, can lead to root rot, so make sure any container provides good drainage. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, and use filtered, distilled, or rainwater whenever possible — tap water with minerals or metals can damage delicate foliage. Regular misting or a pebble tray can help maintain the higher humidity this plant loves. If leaf edges turn brown, it’s often a sign the air is too dry.

During spring and summer, feed your Calathea ‘Royal Standard’ monthly with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertilizer. Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant breathe. It prefers temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C) and should be protected from cold drafts or sudden temperature shifts.

With its refined texture and rhythmic leaf movement, this plant fits beautifully in interior spaces that need a calm, natural focal point — from living rooms to shaded patios in warm climates.
