Calathea ‘Rattlesnake’ – Striking Tropical Foliage for Your Home

Calathea lancifolia, commonly known as the “Rattlesnake Plant,” is a captivating tropical houseplant renowned for its long, lance-shaped leaves adorned with dark green wavy patterns that resemble the markings of a rattlesnake. The undersides of its leaves feature rich purple tones, adding depth and drama to its vibrant appearance. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this plant brings a lush, tropical aesthetic to any indoor space.

Plant Characteristics
Calathea ‘Rattlesnake’ reaches 18–30 inches in height and 12–18 inches in width at maturity, forming a dense, upright bush. Its leaves are highly responsive to light, folding slightly at night and opening during the day, earning it a place among “prayer plants.” Although it occasionally flowers, the subtle blooms are secondary to its decorative foliage.

Light and Placement
This plant thrives in medium to bright indirect light but tolerates lower light conditions. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves and fade the unique patterns, so placement near a north- or east-facing window is ideal. It adds visual interest to living rooms, bedrooms, or office corners, especially when combined with other tropical foliage like monstera or philodendron.

Watering and Humidity
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, watering when the top inch feels dry. Reduce watering slightly in winter. Calathea ‘Rattlesnake’ prefers high humidity — mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier. Filtered or distilled water is recommended to prevent leaf tip browning caused by minerals.

Soil and Maintenance
Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with diluted houseplant fertilizer. Sensitive roots require careful handling during repotting, recommended every 1–2 years in spring. Protect the plant from drafts and temperature drops below 65°F (18°C).

Additional Notes
Calathea ‘Rattlesnake’ is non-toxic to humans but thrives in a stable, humid environment and is sensitive to water quality. Its dynamic, patterned foliage makes it an engaging centerpiece, ideal for plant enthusiasts seeking a living piece of art.
