Calathea makoyana – The Graceful Peacock Plant
With its elegant, feather-like foliage and mesmerizing patterns, Calathea makoyana, also known as the Peacock Plant or Cathedral Windows, brings a touch of tropical sophistication to any indoor space. Native to the humid rainforests of Brazil, this compact ornamental plant is admired for its artistic leaves that open with the morning light and gently fold at dusk—a daily rhythm that gives it its “prayer plant” nickname.
Appearance & Growth:
Calathea makoyana grows up to 18–20 inches tall (45–50 cm) and forms lush, bushy clumps. Each leaf reaches about 6 inches (15 cm) in length, painted with soft lime-green and deep emerald brushstrokes on the surface, while the undersides reveal striking shades of burgundy and violet. The plant develops from a small rhizome, producing new leaves that unfurl gracefully. Though it rarely blooms indoors, it may occasionally produce small, pale yellow flowers in winter under the right conditions.
Care & Environment:
In its natural habitat, Calathea makoyana thrives beneath the rainforest canopy, so it prefers bright, indirect light and consistently warm, humid air. Keep temperatures between 65–75°F (18–24°C) year-round and avoid cold drafts. For best results, maintain high humidity—around 60% or more—by misting regularly, using a humidifier, or placing the pot on a pebble tray with water.
The soil should be light, rich, and slightly acidic, with excellent drainage. A mix of peat-free organic compost with perlite or clay pebbles works perfectly. Keep the soil evenly moist, never soggy, and use soft, filtered, or rainwater when possible. During spring and summer, feed monthly with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer to support vibrant foliage. Repot every two years in early spring, refreshing the soil and checking roots for decay.
Calathea makoyana also benefits from monthly leaf cleaning to remove dust and enhance its natural sheen. Propagation is simple by division during repotting—separate rooted sections and replant in moist, warm conditions until new growth appears.
Design & Companions:
Ideal for bright living rooms, offices, or shaded patios in tropical climates, the Peacock Plant pairs beautifully with ferns, philodendrons, or other shade-loving tropicals. Its sculptural leaves make it a perfect choice for adding texture and movement to modern or bohemian interiors.
