Aralia Fabian Stump (Polyscias scutellaria ‘Fabian’)
The Aralia Fabian Stump is an elegant indoor shrub that brings a touch of calm, natural beauty into any home or office. Known for its sturdy, tree-like trunk and distinctive round leaves — deep green on top and a rich purple underneath — this plant creates a sophisticated, tropical atmosphere. Originating from the Pacific Islands, Polyscias scutellaria ‘Fabian’ grows slowly, reaching about 4–5 feet in height when mature, forming a compact canopy of glossy foliage that looks striking in modern interiors.
The Fabian Aralia prefers bright, indirect light and adapts well to medium light conditions. A few hours of soft morning or evening sun will enhance leaf color, but it should be protected from harsh midday rays that may scorch its leaves. It thrives in average indoor temperatures and enjoys moderate humidity — ideal for typical American homes.
For watering, allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again. In warmer months, this may mean weekly watering, while during winter it should be less frequent. Always ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot. Use distilled or filtered water at room temperature for best results. Feeding once a month during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertilizer supports steady growth.
Aralia Fabian Stump prefers rich, well-draining soil with a mix of loam, sand, and organic matter. It rarely needs repotting due to its slow growth. Occasional pruning helps maintain shape, encourages a thicker trunk, and keeps the plant tidy — remove yellow or brown leaves and trim above a node for best results.
In landscape compositions, this plant works beautifully as a statement piece or in combination with palms, ferns, and other tropical foliage. Its sculptural form and two-tone leaves make it ideal for minimalist or zen-inspired spaces.
