Dieffenbachia 'Puerto Rico' – Lush Tropical Foliage for Your Home
Dieffenbachia 'Puerto Rico', also known as the “dumb cane,” is a striking tropical plant valued for its large, vibrant leaves with green and creamy-white variegation. Mature plants can reach 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 m) in height, making them a bold focal point in any indoor space. Stems can be trimmed to encourage a fuller, bushier growth, allowing flexibility in shaping the plant.
Plant Characteristics
This variety features broad, ovate leaves with distinctive variegation. It thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates low light, though leaf patterns may become less vivid and growth may slow. Dieffenbachia 'Puerto Rico' prefers well-draining soil and should be watered when the top inch of soil feels dry. High humidity supports healthy foliage and vibrant colors.
Care Tips
Use a light, peat-based potting mix with perlite for improved drainage. Fertilize monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring through early fall). Rotate the pot regularly to ensure even growth, and wipe the leaves to remove dust and maintain leaf health. Tall plants may require a stake or trellis for support.
Placement and Landscaping Use
Perfect for indoor spaces with bright, filtered light, Dieffenbachia 'Puerto Rico' pairs beautifully with other tropical or foliage plants like ferns, calatheas, or philodendrons. It works well as a standalone statement plant or as part of a lush indoor green corner.
